Black Country Beat Their Fears
9th June 2009

Andy Duncan is a former Royal Marine physical training instructor and has developed a programme called The Fear Master. He uses his own experience of dealing with fear in combat and overcoming extreme training challenges, and his training in motivation, hypnosis and NLP to help people meet their full potential. He has previously worked with service personnel returning from duties in Iraq and Afghanistan and now works with individuals and business entrepreneurs to overcome fears that are holding them or their business from succeeding.

Andy gave an energetic and lively talk about how you can live your life the way you want to and not how others think you should.

Andy broke the ice by asking the audience to draw a pig. He then explained how this drawing can be analysed to describe your personality. For example, whether your pig was facing you or drawn sideways, the positioning of the ears, the number of legs showing, the size of the tail etc – were all indications of your personality. This led to comparisons of drawn pigs, although some delegates wanted to keep theirs well and truly hidden!

Delegates were then asked to do some soul searching and list their values ie what’s really important to them – and were asked to rank them and list five reasons for each value. It was a bit late in the day to start delving into your inner self, but with encouragement from Andy delegates managed to make good inroads into a list.

He explained how this list can be used as a powerful reference tool ie to get rid of your fear, go to your list of ethics and values. Ask yourself:

Are you living your life true to you?
Are your values related to your behaviour?

Motivation needs to be channelled through your values - so ensure your values are in the right order.

He also explained that to be successful we often need to fail. And often people fail every day. But you must face where you are going on your journey. We must ask ourselves: Are you going towards (facing) or away from (have your back to) your goals?

What makes wealthy, successful people better than you? Your own mindset!

Key steps to remember are:

  1. Elicit your values
  2. Rank your values
  3. Check if you're Facing Towards or Away from your goals
